Goodwill Microwave Cart turned {Sweet} Lemonade Stand

Recently, I shared with you some Goodwill finds for the week.  Among them was this microwave cart I got for 6 bucks.
My kids, as well as the other kids on the street love nothing more than to spend entire Saturdays during the summer setting up a lemonade stand in front of our house.  This usually involves dragging various furniture items from our house to the front yard, and then having to drag them all back in at the end of the day.  This year, I decided to stop the insanity.  Why not have a cart on wheels that can be stored in the garage when not in use? (Cuz ya’ll who know me, know I have so much room to spare in my garage!)
I thought this project would take me several days, but I actually managed to complete it in just a day.  First I primed my cart and then sprayed it down with two coats of Krylon’s Blue Ocean Breeze.

If you’ve never tried this color, it is awesome!
The super helpful guy working in the lumber section of Home Depot was nice enough to let me take the leftover trim people had cut in the store home for free!  Perfect for the poles I needed to make the top!
You wouldn’t believe how hard it is to find a chalkboard these days.  All they have are whiteboards everywhere you go!  So, I had some leftover luan from the pantry project and a can of chalkboard paint from another project.  Using an exacto knife, I was able to trim the luan to the size I needed.  I gave it three coats of chalkboard paint and attached it to the back of the cart.

Remember those cute fabrics I got at Ben Franklin?

I used these to make the little banner and awning.  Then, I used my Cricut to cut out “Lemonade” in white vinyl.
I picked up the Tiki sign, flip-flop towels, and flamingo all from the dollar aisle at Target.  I also purchased the lemonade pitcher there as well, and added some polka dots and lettering using pink and white vinyl.
What do ya think?  I just love it!
And, the cabinet and little shelf on the back are great for storing all those necessary supplies!

  5. This is sooo adorable! We had the same microwave cart, and I'm hoping it's still in our garage and not thrown away! I wish we lived on a street that got a lot of traffic. But your project has inspired me to try to figure out something else I can turn it into! Possibly some sort of puppet theater? Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. What a great use for the stand. I bet the kids love it. I love the banner and decorative touches you added.

I like RuthAnn's comment about using it as a puppet theater too, maybe over the winter?

  18. Seriously LOVE THIS! I was at Costco last week and they had a stand extremely similar to this on markdown for $50 way more then I am willing to pay but my girls really wanted it. Now I need to find something similar to make our own, they will be so pleased. Also this is a lot more sturdier then the Costco version.

  34. omg omg omg omg! We JUST had a lemonade stand this weekend (where the kids made TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS! WOOT WOOT!) and I happen to have an old microwave cart (that I have "stored" outside wasting away for 2 years) trying to think if I should re-purpose it as a mini-potting bench or junk it!! I am so excited! Thank you for your fabulous idea!!

  36. So what do you think of that Krylon spray paint? I am getting ready to paint my daughter's headboard white and think that's the route I will go.

  38. I LOVE your cart! The funny thing is that I showed my daughter the boring microwave cart and asked if she wanted one….assuming she would say no. She said it would be great for her art stuff. What? I can't wait for her to get older and see how creative her brain will be!

Thanks for sharing your idea. My kids have been wanting to do a lemonade stand for ages and I want to do it "right." This is it. Would it be possible for you to post details on how you made the roofing?

    Thanks!
